• Pay your apprentices. Apprentices should be paid a fair wage for their work. This will help to attract and retain quality candidates. • Market your program . Let your community circle know about your apprenticeship program. Talk to your employees, post on social media and reach out to local schools and organizations. • Be flexible. Apprenticeships are a learning experience for both the apprentices and the mentors. Be prepared to adjust your program as needed. • Celebrate your apprentices' successes. When your apprentices achieve their goals, celebrate their successes! This will help to motivate them and keep them engaged in the program. Small to medium size businesses can work with their local workforce development agency or vocational school to find an apprenticeship program that meets their specific needs. Creating your own apprenticeship program can be a great way to build your workforce pipeline, reduce staff turnover, and give back to your community. By following these tips, you can create a successful apprenticeship program that benefits everyone involved.

• Identify a mentor. Apprenticeships are all about learning from a mentor. Someone who is already on staff who is passionate about his or her career, understands your culture and who can share their knowledge and expertise with an apprentice. • Provide on-the-job training. Apprenticeships are not just about classroom instruction. Apprentices need to learn by doing. Make sure your program provides plenty of on-the-job training. • Identify your target audience. Who are you looking to recruit for your apprenticeship program? Are you looking for high school/college students, recent graduates, or adults looking for a career change? Once you know your target audience, you can start to market your program to them. • Create a curriculum. What skills and knowledge do you want your apprentices to learn? Your curriculum should be tailored to the specific needs of your restaurant, resort, hotel, i.e. your target audience.
